In spite of our knowledge of how devastating war is, mankind has still not found a way to resolve conflicts peacefully, without this “necessary evil”. Why is that?

In Lois Lowry’s novel The Giver, Jonas is faced with the realities of war and more. This realization changes his outlook on everything – even childhood games. Why have the realities of war not ended warfare in our lifetime? Consider this and Former President Carter’s quote:

“War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other’s children.”  ~ President Jimmy Carter, December 10 ,2002

I think we aren’t able to resolve anything in peace beacause countries are breaking laws, treaties, and some countries could be in anarchy. Anarchy means that no one rules. Since we are under a democracy, we have freedom of speech, and if we are in alliances, and our alliance get attacked, then we will be in war helping the attacked country.

I hear what you are saying, Alexis. We do have some countries in chaos. I am wandering if it is because “no one rules” or if it is because the ruler is denounced or overthrown. So many nations have felt oppressed and subjugated too long.

Perhaps the bigger issue for me is that I grew up in the 1960s, a time of great social change. People marched for peace and died for equal rights. Protest songs decried the war and still peace is elusive.
