I think it was somewhat funny and very well put together. I think it will be a very good movie and it will have good details. I thought it was going to be about what was in the story, but it was diffrent and it also give us more details than the story.

    • September 27th, 2012 at 10:16 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

Why do you think it won’t be about what is in the story? Isn’t the movie based upon the novel? What is the primary purpose of a trailer?

  2. September 26th, 2012 at 4:55 PM      Reply Marnetta Says:

The trailer makes me think the movie is way better than the book. It compares with my imagination because I pictured Gollum how he looked in the movie, but it contrasts with my imagination because the wizard looked much older than I pictured.

The movie The Hobbit is going to be good because it describes the book and everything and they even showed Gollum (an ugly, slimy little creature). So i can’t wait until December 14, 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!for The Hobbit to come out!!!!!!!!!!

To me, the trailer makes the book look more fascinating. My imagination is like the trailer because my imagination is adventurous and creative. My imagination is different the trailer because I wouldn’t have been able to imagine something as pale and small as Gollum.

  5. September 26th, 2012 at 8:56 PM      Reply Jessica Milburn Says:

Well, the video was very different than I had imagined the book to be. I thought Bilbo would be the old one along with Gandalf but I also thought that the dwarfs would be younger not old. I thought the dwarfs were going to be short and stout with chubby beer guts and short hair. I thought that The Hill would be more like a hole inside of The Hill. Not like with a walkway and sidewalk. To put it in a short version it was very different than I imagined.

Jessica, I reacted similarly to the newly released trailer as you. However, let’s remember that this is the prequel to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo was younger in The Hobbit when his adventure begins. So, in the trailer (one of them that I watch) there is a camera shot of an older Bilbo. I think it would be a great idea for you to go back to the text to see how Tolkien characterizes the dwarves. Is there evidence in the text that supports your perception or the films depiction of these characters? There were references to their appearance and their beards. Also consider their language, how they speak and what they say to determine if the dwarves are younger or older than portrayed. Tolkien’s description of Bilbo’s dwelling is woven throughout the book as Bilbo laments been away from The Hill. How does Tolkien describe the dwelling? Shabby, cozy, damp, warm, uninviting, appealing? Let me know.

I agree with everything you just said to Jessica, Ms. Hayes. It’s true the book was boring to read. The movie looks like it is going to be better then the book. At least it is making more people want to go see the movie. You makes our class read The Hobbit together while you or “Bob” reads it aloud because some people are sturggling with reading the book and it helps them with their readinng.

        • September 27th, 2012 at 11:09 AM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

Thank you for pointing this out, Patricia. The Common Core Georgia Performance Standards incorporated more complex text. As teachers, it is our task to incorporate strategies to make the text accessible to all students. It is at times daunting but doable.

    • September 27th, 2012 at 9:17 AM      Reply Marnetta Says:

In the book they said Bilbo would be sixty-something, but in the movie he looked about thirty.

      • September 27th, 2012 at 5:43 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

So, you know what I’m going to say: Where’s the evidence? Take me back to the text. Find a description that clarifies the arguement you raised and cite the page. Does anyone want to help Marnetta resolve this? If so, please quote the relevant text and cite the page number. Thanks!

Do you think the movie will be better than the book? We got to go see the movie! Who’s with me?

  6. September 26th, 2012 at 9:26 PM      Reply Taylor Robinson Says:

I don’t really like The Hobbit. The trailer sounds better than the book to me. It is different because it is better to understand to me than the book. They’re the same because I think it’s the same literature we are reading in the movie.

    • September 26th, 2012 at 10:14 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

Taylor, many of my students have not embraced the book either. I think that for some of them it is because they are not avid readers. For other, Tolkien’s story-line is just not animated enough. However, let’s not forget when this was written, Tolkien’s condition when he was writing, and events that may have shaped the plot. So, yes, being the technologically stimulated people we are, this book may feel slow in its pace and development. After all, Tolkien had a lot of time to write from his bed. Most people find that the book, that a movie is based upon, is using more engaging, but we are each entitled to our preferences. Personally, I think he devotes a lot of his craft to describing the setting of the story. It’s as if the setting itself is a character. I love that. Anyway, we will be planning a field trip to see the movie. Hopefully, it will help you and your cohorts appreciate what a masterful writer is and how he shaped this genre.

The trailer or movie seems a lot different from the book itself. The trailer takes the details from the book and uses them perfectly. When I imagine the characters, I see the actors who play the characters, but when books are made into movies they change it up a little bit. The hobbit hole is exactly how I imagine it to be, very warm and cozy just like the book describes! I really can’t wait until I see the movie. Then I can make a better comparison between the book and the movie. So far I think the movie will be better than the book, but I will see.

To me the trailor looks so much better than the book. The trailor is different from the book bcause the movie is so much easier to understand because the words you see in the book might be hard to pronounce since it was old literature, but now we get to hear how they were really said and the book is different from the movie because it looks like they cut out a lot of important things and who was Bilbo speaking to in the beginning. So, they added more parts also, and I pictured the characters differently like the dwarfs uglier and Bilbo shorter.

To me the trailer was better than the book. The book makes the movie seem lame. Well I thought the movie was going to be adventurous and scary, a little bit.

I think that the trailer was LAME! Its was only 2 minutes and 31 seconds smh. K’mon now! ARE YOU SERIOUS???

    • October 2nd, 2012 at 8:34 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

It’s the trailer; not the movie. The movie requires a ticket, until they release the DVD 🙂

If you will kindly placate me, I prefer the conventional spellings for this blog.

To me most girls want to go to school because they want to help their community do better or they want to have a good education to help out their family. Some girls do not want to go to school because they think they have a good life, and they don’t need an education. Or, they think avoiding an education is good, so they think it is cool to not get an education.
