“Man and his deed are two distinct things…” Mahatma Gandhi What can we learn from Gandhi’s message?
“‘Hate the sin and not the sinner’ is a precept which, though easy enough to understand, is rarely practised, and that is why the poison of hatred spreads in the world…
Man and his deed are two distinct things. Whereas a good deed should call forth approbation and a wicked deed disapprobation, the doer of the deed, whether good or wicked, always deserves respect or pity as the case may be.
Those who seek to destroy men rather than manners adopt the latter and become worse than those whom they destroy under the mistaken belief that the manners will die with the men. They do not know the root of the evil.
It is the acid test of nonviolence that, in a nonviolent conflict, there is no rancour left behind, and in the end the enemies are converted into friends. That was my experience in South Africa, with General Smuts. He started with being my bitterest opponent and critic. Today he is my warmest friend.
The principal implication of ahimsa is that the ahimsa in us ought to soften and not to stiffen our opponents’ attitude to us; it ought to melt him; it ought to strike a responsive chord in his heart. ” Mahatma Ghandi

I think Gandhi’s message is what inspired the people to make THE PLANETS OF THE APES.
Help us understand your argument, Marnetta. Please elaborate.
So your saying in the plant the apes they wanted to NOT have violence. But when I saw the movie I am pretty sure they shot that big ape off the tower and kill him, when saw that movie I thought it was more racist then anything. That all I got to say.
My brief reflection about what I have learned about Mahatma Ghandi is that he was one of the heros who want think to chance and have freedom for India. He when to bad thing like beat up by cop, when to prosin by UK. Then with he was done fight for freedom .Then final got there freedom and he die by getting shot by a young man.
Mahatma Gandhi is a hero. He was a Hindu. That means that you cannot eat meat in his religion. He fought for civil and human rights stood up for what he believe in. He was a hero in South Africa and India. He didn’t want Indians to feel like they couldn’t do any thing in their life. They had been treated as slaves under the British control. They needed to have a pass to go places in India. The passes were British government property. They were treated unfairly. Gandhi stopped it and he became a hero.
Great background information, Rickayla.
Our theme for this common core unit is “Burning Bridges: What History Has Taught Us About Civil Rights”. What do you think about the message in Gandhi’s text? What does it imply about civil or human rights?
I think this means that you can do so much better if you fight with words and not with hands. There is a saying, “Actions speak louder than words”, but Gandhi didn’t believe in that the action should be violent. He believed in non-violence to violence.
Exactly, Genelle. That captures the spirit of ahimsa that we discussed in class.
I think we can learn from Gandhi’s message that the sins and hatred of mankind can only hurt the man. It means that the hatred and the poison, or the man and the deeds, of the man and its sins represent the approbation or disapprobation (the intelligence or non-intelligence) of man himself. That’s what I think Gandhi’s message means.
Danielle, I concur with your interpretation that hatred can only hurt mankind. I am wondering about your understanding of “the approbation and disapprobation ” of man himself. Could you revisit the text and look at the context in which the words are used to see if they convey a different meaning?
Ghandi’s message is that we don’t have to use violence to get respesct. We can use our words. In the passage it says “hate the sin no the sinner” I believe that this means hate what the person did not the person who did the sin. The message I got was that you don’t have to fight or use weapons to get respect or our rights we can use words. Also, I believe that I shouldn’t hate a person for the sin they did I should hate the sin.

Gandhi message was to say that you don’t have to fight with hands but you can fight with words. And you don’t need to hurt anyone. What I learned is that you should be nice and not really worry about anyone if they don’t like you. Also I learned is that you should not fight over stupid things that do not involve you. And to sum it all up is that you can do anything you put your mind to.
I think Gandhi massage is to stand up for what is right even you are the only one standing.
What we can learn about Gandhi’s message is that he actually was no harm to anyone at all because all wanted to do is give independence to India (because India was ruled by Britain) and just wanted peace not war. “Hate the sin, not the sinner” is a quote that people should learn form because a lot of people in the world are very hateful and just looks for trouble, pain, etc. That is what we should learn from Mahatma Gandhi’s message, not to hate people but the bad deed that they do.
Gandhi is telling us that we should hate the sin and not the person that does the sin, Like he didn’t hate the British but he hated what they did to the Indians.
what I can learn from his messages is that you don’t have to fight with your hands you can fight with words .I also learned in his message that hate the sin and not the sinner means that hat what the person has did and not the person.
What we can learn from Gandhi’s message is mainly about deeds. He thinks that when you do a good deed you should be acknowledged / rewarded and a wicked deed should be disapproval. We can learn to do good deeds for people and if you know something that you are doing is wrong you need to disapproval it.
We can learn from Gandhi’s message is to be non-violent and to treat people the way you want to be treated.
Gandhi’s message is saying that fight for your people never be scared. I think this was important to Gandhi. He fought for religion. He also fought for civil rights, human rights, and stood up for what he believed. He was a hero in South Africa and India.
Gandhi message was to say that you don’t have to fight with hands but you can fight with words. And you don’t need to hurt anyone. I like your comment but you need to practice this more often
What we can learn from Gandhi message is that don’t fight with your hand, fight with your words because words are strong to. You can also learn from this message that don’t hate them, help them what they don’t know and what they should know. Also what he is saying is that you can’t always solve thing with violence because it never going to help others of yourself.
and dont be so stupid like these students that do things
What I learned from Gandhi is that we should not hate the sinner hate the sin. What I think about this is that some people might think that it is hard for you not to hate the one who did it because the person who did it is causing the harm. But I see where Gandhi is coming from because you can always not be mad at the one who did it because they just might not know what they are doing. Also I learned is that you do not have to fight with hands but you can fight with words. I think this is talking about don’t use weapons to battle it out but you can use words to talk out the problem. And also you don’t need to hurt anyone and also you should be nice and not really worried about anyone if they don’t like be nice and not really worried about anyone if they don’t like you. Last but not least yo.u should never fight over stupid things and things that is not that important to you and that is not worth fighting over. And that is what I think
I think Gandhi’s message is for people to not hate each other. I also think love, and happiness. He loves his race because he said he was going to live like his people, and he didn’t charge towards the British during or after they started shooting towards his race. What I learned from Gandhi’s message is to not hate each other because at one part of your life, the person who has did you so wrong might need you later on in life.
Gandhi fights for freedom. They treated Indians wrong just like us our (blacks). He never back down on nobody. He fight and fight for freedom . He told his race that we need to fight back. They finally got there freedom in 1947. One day a young man shot Gandhi to death . Gandhi was a good man, he fight for Indians freedom until he got it.
Mahatma Gandhi’s message was that you should hate the sin and not the sinner, because that’s not what Gandhi say, that’s not what you suppose to do. An ahimsa is the basis of the search for truth because that’s why everything has a value. What I can learn is that you should follow your religion and don’t do what you’re not supposed to do.
and i also think that this means that you could learn better if you fight with words and not with youre hands and you want have to worry about other people trying to get in what you are talking about
What I learned about Mahatma Gandhi’s message is that you should hate the sin what the person did and not the person. We can fight using our words, instead of being violent using weapons against our own race and killing each other.
A man how dedicates his words to make them very real. I can say for one that Gandhi is a leader of knowledge, I can say that I learn from him in everyway so I am thankful. Also Marnetta what a very funny comment
