Gun Control: Do you think it is time for our country to change our laws to restrict the types of guns people can own?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

In the aftermath of the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the debate about gun control laws in our country has gained renewed momentum. While we are a nation unified in our sorrow, we are divided in our resolution.

I have listened to the outcry to arm teachers, school administrators, worship leaders and congregants. I have seen courageous survivors of violence, such as Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, lend their voice to this concern. I have read about the furor that was ignited when a New York City newspaper published the names of legal gun owners.

In the midst of all of the controversy, I am keenly aware of my own realization that this is not the world in which I thought I would grow old; it is also not the same world that our founding fathers knew. As a citizenry, is it time for us to reconcile our past and present needs? Should we reconsider our rights and our responsibilities in today’s context?

Do you think it is time for our country to change our laws to restrict the types of guns people can own?

  1. January 9th, 2013 at 9:47 AM      Reply shenelle Says:

yes i think this is a good idea because some people think just because they have guns they can kill everybody that they see.

  2. January 9th, 2013 at 9:48 AM      Reply Madyson Garrett Says:

I think the country should keep the laws to let the people that have a license to use it for things like if someone breaks in their house or does something completely illegal. However, they should change the laws to only allow military people and people that are in training should use automatic guns.

    • February 12th, 2013 at 8:35 PM      Reply Tahmirackle Langston Says:

Ii agree because……I think that it is time to change the rule about the guns. I say this because people are killing people for no reason and they are not thinking twice. I say this because they are probably going to send you to jail even if you didn’t mean to shot anyone. The reason why I say this is because they are getting strict about this shooting and the things that have been happening about brining guns to school.

  3. January 9th, 2013 at 9:55 AM      Reply keanna Says:

I think yes and no because we should let people who never been to jail have a gun .And the people who been to jail shouldn’t have a gun.

  4. January 9th, 2013 at 10:03 AM      Reply destiny grady Says:

Yes, because some people that buy guns have a troubled background and then they might just lose it one day and notice that gun they bought and go on a rampage.

  5. January 9th, 2013 at 10:05 AM      Reply Love Sosa Says:

I think we do need a law for gun control in America because people are going crazy with these guns. I hear every week that someone I know from Ohio died from a shooting. I was watching a news channel and they said, “There are more gun sales than McDonalds.” I think only police should have guns. Some people might think how will I protect myself, if the attacker don’t have a gun and you don’t have one you don’t nothing to worry about, go to the store and get pepper spray or something. If they do make a law banning all guns people will still have guns, some people still have the way around the law.

  7. January 9th, 2013 at 12:04 PM      Reply quinisha Says:

No, I do not think it’s time to change our laws about what type of gun a person should own. All guns are made for the same reason, to defend the owner , although they are not all used for the same reason. If a person pays for a gun it should be a gun of their choice not a gun of the state’s choice .

  8. January 9th, 2013 at 12:08 PM      Reply Brekaydra Bell Says:

They should not change the law because people need to protect their self and their family. People don`t kill people for no reason .It is always will be a reason to kill for someone to kill .but I think people should only use guns for protection only. Or to protect other people the polices or the army. Only to keep safe in protection.

    • February 4th, 2013 at 9:02 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

You state that “people don’t kill people for no reason.” Are you suggesting that these gunman who have committed mass shootings and killed innocent people have a valid reason? Perhaps in their minds they have a reason, but these acts are senseless tragedies that waste precious lives.

  9. January 9th, 2013 at 12:13 PM      Reply Tyona Smith Says:

Yes, I do think that it is time for our country to change our laws to restrict certain types of guns people can own because honestly, how I feel is that the people or companies selling the guns do not know how the customer buying them is going to use them.

  10. January 9th, 2013 at 12:16 PM      Reply Itiria Baker Says:

No, I don’t think it’s time for our country to change our laws to restrict the types of guns people own. Some people have guns to protect themselves because the senseless killing are sad. So it doesn’t matter what kind of gun they need for protection.

    • January 10th, 2013 at 5:50 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

So, you are still saying that every type of weapon conceiveable is okay for the average citizen to own for protection? Doesn’t this also place them in the hands of those who may do others harm?

  11. January 9th, 2013 at 12:30 PM      Reply jasmine woodard Says:

No, I think it’s not time for our country to change ours laws, to restrict the type of guns we have because, it’s a lot of stuff happening in the world, like people killing others for no reason. we also need guns because, of our safely .

    • January 9th, 2013 at 3:24 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

I guess what we have to consider is whether or not the easy availability of guns makes us safer or places us at a greater risk. One has to wonder if “a lot of the stuff happening in the world, like people killing others for no reason” could be avoided with a more restrictive ownership policy.

  12. January 9th, 2013 at 1:36 PM      Reply Rickayla Says:

Well, I think no because people need to protect their children and their homes. They have to defend themeselves against criminals. I also say yes because people can shoot anything. They can shoot a person if they had a reason or not. It would be sad to see people die and go so soon before you could tell them you love them.

    • January 9th, 2013 at 3:11 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

You state, “They have to defend themselves against criminals,” but how does this keep automatic weapons out of the hands of, as you say, criminals? Is it possible that having such weapons available to the general population places everyone at greater risk?

  13. January 9th, 2013 at 1:40 PM      Reply Kayla Thomas Says:

Well I think we don’t need to change anything with the gun laws, because in my further I see a mega load of guns in my house, car, and etc. The reason I say all this is all people have the right to protect themselves. Without them how are you going to stop robbers breaking in to your house? With tazers, sticks, or mas like the police.

  14. January 9th, 2013 at 2:02 PM      Reply tatianna Says:

Yes, it’s time for our country to change our laws. The first reason is because there are many people being hurt and also killed. This is because of the weapons we are allowed to carry around. I also think that people use them for protection, but all the killing needs to stop. It’s also pitiful that kids and adults have gotten killed. So yes, they need to pass the law to change the kinds of guns we can carry around.

Yes, I think it’s time for our country to change our laws to restrict certain types of guns people own. Some people are stupid with them. People should have a standard size gun.

  17. January 9th, 2013 at 4:48 PM      Reply dashanna perry Says:

I think we should change the law to restrict the type of gun people can own because their are alot of people in the world who is in possession of a gun and that person could be crazy and use the gun for inappropriately and kill.

Yes, because people Care about their children or relatives getting shot more than 5 time ,Some kids can’t even survived 2 bullets. Also for them to be so innocent about to something to these people . I think they should.

I think the law makers should be more strict about certain types of guns because people with kill anybody for no reason.

  21. January 10th, 2013 at 2:25 PM      Reply shanya edwards Says:

Yes, I think it time for the law to change because many people are dying every day because of a hand gun or an automatic gun .Also the reason I say this because many people walk around the neighborhood with guns and take it for advantage like just walk in people homes and start shooting. The reason many people are scared these days is because of people with guns and if you talk to anybody mama or sister wrong, they come back and shoot instead of talking it out. Military people shouldn’t have one either, after the war, because they see visions of people dying and go crazy.

  22. January 10th, 2013 at 2:27 PM      Reply iesha Says:

Yes, I think it is time for our country to change the types of guns people can own because in this country now days people use guns for anything. It’s just like when Treyvon Martin was shot; the man said he looked suspicious. If they are not legal or the person’s background is not clean they should not be able to purchase or own a gun. To me they should make a law saying you should be 21 or older to own a gun because young people do all kinds of things with guns to protect them when not needed.

  23. January 10th, 2013 at 2:28 PM      Reply alexis Says:

yes, because there are very dangerous but I do understand it protect you but we just do not need certain guns people these days are just crazy remember guns are not toys.

  24. January 10th, 2013 at 2:28 PM      Reply breana brown Says:

yes i think its time for our country to change its laws. Why because some people do not know how to use there guns for the right things. Every body are strating to kill people for know reason at all. They just want to use there guns to show off are, because they are crazy and I don’t belive that the goverment should sell gun to someone thats crazy are have a bad back ground. Thats the way i feel.

  25. January 10th, 2013 at 2:29 PM      Reply Unknown Says:

No they shouldn’t change the law because, how will we protect ourselves. It’s usually the immense men that try to harm, and what is a hand gun going to do to them. But I do think that you should have a license if you are to have a gun. You may say what if someone walks up and shoot me with a machine gun, what average person walks up and down the street with a machine gun. If they don’t change the law sorry for you get a security system.

    • January 10th, 2013 at 5:33 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

It sounds a little insensitive and a bit naive in light of recent events. Some of the perpetrators in our nation’s mass shootings were “average” people walking around with automatic weapons – “machine guns”. I am not sure that a security system would have prevented these tragedies. At the Sandy Hook Elementary School, they had a security system that was breached with an automatic weapon – a machine gun.

  26. January 10th, 2013 at 2:30 PM      Reply larrica dickerson Says:

I say yes and no because some people are crazy and they would just start killing people. They really don’t needs a gun only police need a gun for good reasons .Also they should check people background in order to have a gun you need to have a ID.

  27. January 10th, 2013 at 2:31 PM      Reply partricia Says:

I say yes and no because sometimes you can have a good reason for shooting people unless if they are in you home trying to rob you, and I say no because some of those guns are dangerous to shoot and very powerful.

  28. January 10th, 2013 at 2:32 PM      Reply "Love Song" Says:

I think it is time for our country to change our laws to restrict the types of guns people can own because some guns are not necessary to use to protect yourself or your family. All you need is a simple pistol not a AK-47 to just spray around with no control.

  29. January 10th, 2013 at 2:33 PM      Reply dekhala Says:

No, because people need to keep themselves and their children safe. Also I say yes, because people are crazy these days.

    • January 10th, 2013 at 5:11 PM      Reply Ms. Hayes Says:

You appear conflicted. Look at the question. The question ask if some types, certain weapons should be restricted. Consider that and see if that helps you structure your thinking and your argument.

  30. January 10th, 2013 at 2:33 PM      Reply keishona Says:

Yes, because you don’t ever know what is going to happen. Some people who own a gun might have a problem. When they get real mad, they might go off and shoot everything in their way.

  31. January 10th, 2013 at 2:33 PM      Reply serenity everett Says:

Yes I do say its time to restrict laws about having guns because alot of poeple are dyinig avery day now from guns. plus if we didnt have guns today i think it wouldent be any problems.

  32. January 30th, 2013 at 2:28 PM      Reply zarrie Says:

no beacuse what if that person break into your house and you the type who keep a gun then that person can shoot him.
