What do you think it would be like if you were a child living in a war-torn country?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

In the novel Year of Impossible Goodbyes by Sook Nyul Choi, our protagonist and narrator Sookan was born in North Korea when it was occupied by the Japanese. Forbidden to speak, worship, dress, or celebrate their Korean heritage; their oppression is a reminder of some of the cruelties inflicted upon Africans when they were enslaved by Americans.

Most of you only know of such injustices through the historical accounts of others; however, I want to encourage you to imagine what it might be like for a child living in this situation. How would you cope? How would you survive?

I think that it would be horrible and scary for me because I really don’t like things like that in the book on how they treated the kids and all the other North Korean people.

This book certainly has us sympathizing with this North Korean family. If we have the heart to look at how the citizens of North Korea are treated today by the military elite, will we be able to care as much as we do for our characters in the novel?

It will be devastating and scary because people will die left and right and guns and bombs will go off every day and the people who live in the country have to deal with see and hear these devastating things that are going on in this country.

I think being in a war-torn country would be hard because you can’t go where you want or do what you want. You can’t even see you friends whenever you want to. I would cope by finding ways to distract the negative ways of war and pray that my family and I would survive the war. I would survive by finding a basement or attic that we could stay in so there wouldn’t be windows breaking while, they are shooting. We would store food and clothes down there so we wouldn’t get hungry or have to go back upstairs if the shooting is overnight.

If I was in a war torn country I probably be sad and frightened and I probably wouldn’t survive without my family.

I think I couldn’t handle it because there would be war every day. It would be a bad day every day. I know I wouldn’t be able to take this because I would be scared every single day.

I would be sad because my lovely country that I know and love would be at war. The things I would try to do in a war – I would protect my family, gather food, and wait out the war.

It will be sad and scared because ever were I would turn around it will be shooting and bombing everywhere. For example, people that live in this country might go crazy because of what they seen so has everybody else because of this they might think they have no point in living if the country they live is tiring apart anyway.

I would be the first one to die. I say this because of my personality. I would talk back to the emperor’s soldiers, speak my mind and basically do what I want to do. To survive, I would just live in Wal-Mart or an abandon warehouse.

I think I will be very bad because, I will probably not make it. I will probably leave before it is time and will leave everything behind; but food, water, soap, clothes, and heavy cloths. I will survive by living in Wal-Mart where all the food and supplies I need is located. I will be eating those talkies like it is nun-thing, stealing the money and juice. It will not be anyone around so what will you do with money just sitting there waiting. (Shoot I will take that Stuff)

As a child in a very wealthy, beautiful, smart country I wouldn’t know. The reason I don’t know why because I ‘m not that person who is there or could imagine what kind of person I could be, but for a fact I can say that I will always try to survive. I will survive for my family, friends, the person I hold dearly, and for my country. I will survive!

    I don’t know ,but I know I won’t survive

I probably would not survive. I would be mourning over lost of family and friends. the land would be barren because of the war. Radiation might be in the air if it was a nuclear war. There would be no hope of escaping.
