Can the perceptions that other people have of us influence how we see ourselves?
The scales of justice were difficult to find in 1960 when Ruby Bridges was chosen to integrate William Frantz Public School. In spite of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling under Brown v. The Board of Education, change was not welcomed in the South. Instead, longstanding Black Codes, Jim Crow Laws, and distorted images of Blacks were pervasive in the South. They were much easier to see than the signs of justice. What impact do you think these contorted images and laws had on how black children and white children viewed themselves and others?
These days, the perception that people have of you does influence how you see yourself. If someone has something negative to say about your physical appearance and they say it aloud, maybe to impress someone, it starts to lower your self esteem when you see yourself they way they see you.
What can someone try to do to avoid being affected by another’s perception? How can we affirm our own positive views of ourselves?
I say yes because some people see us a smart people. But when they get home is something else ( they are going through things that they don’t want to go through) going on. Also when people make comments about us we think that we should change it but sometimes we do. Some people get offended quick and they want to get to fighting. And when some people say things to us weather its good or bad still change it.
I don’t believe someone else’s perspective can change how you feel about yourself. Like if someone doesn’t like what you wear doesn’t mean that you don’t have to like it.
What is it more insidious and persistent? What if it’s even endorsed by society?
I say yes the can because even though people dont know you you can make an bad example on yourslef. And also some people care what people say about them.
Tahmirackle, I am not sure that I’m getting the gist of your post. Could you read it and consider wording it differently? Also, what resources or strategies might you use to check your spelling before you post your comments?
To me these days kids don’t want an education. They think playing and laughing is having an education.I no alot of black girl that will be very happy to have an education like us. I just wish that our black girls could learn the importance of having an education.
